Our History
A Legacy of Care for Over 120 Years
Madison Healthcare Services has a long legacy of community-focused care dating back over 75 years. Here’s a look at the milestones that shaped who we are today:
Timeline of Growth and Change:
1940s
More than 80 Lutheran congregations of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America came together to establish the Lutheran Old People’s Home in Madison, Minnesota. The first superintendent, Rev. Richard Syrdal, helped lay the foundation for a future built on vision and faith.
1950s
The facility expanded to add infirmary beds, introducing medical care services that would become essential in nursing homes. A part-time bookkeeper joined the staff to support growing operations.
1960s
Further expansion included the creation of Luther Haven in Montevideo and a 68-bed addition at the Madison facility. New community areas, dining space, and offices were added, all built to meet updated health department regulations.
1970s
Growth continued with another addition that replaced the original 1914 building. Economic strength in the area allowed for planned expansion and modernization of resident rooms and care areas.
1980s
Hilltop Residence was built through the HUD program, offering affordable senior housing next to the care center. Changes in Medicare coverage and nursing home regulations led to more structured financial planning and the beginning steps toward integrating hospital and nursing home services.
1990s
Madison Lutheran Home Inc. officially brought together the hospital, nursing home, Hilltop Residence, and clinic under one organization. A major remodel improved efficiencies, and planning began to relocate the Lac qui Parle Clinic onto the shared campus.
2000s
With shifting demographics and expectations, Madison Lutheran Home transitioned from larger shared rooms to more private, home-like spaces. Modernized lounges, dining areas, and activity rooms were added. Licensing was adjusted to reflect a more personalized model of care.
In recent years, we changed our name from Madison Lutheran Home to Madison Healthcare Services, uniting our care center, hospital, and clinic under one name and mission. We remain dedicated to our community and to providing modern, patient-centered care rooted in our Christian values.
