Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, Madison Healthcare Services and the rest of the country are raising awareness of mental health. This year Madison Healthcare Services is stepping up to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families.
Good mental health is essential to overall health and personal well-being. It also contributes to the ability to lead a healthy, balanced, and productive life. Emotional problems can impair a person’s thinking, feelings, and behavior and, over time, can become increasingly serious and disabling. Unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment for mental health issues for a number of reasons. They may not be completely aware of the extent of their problem, they may be hesitant to make contact with a mental health professional because they fear they will be stigmatized, or they may not know how to access services.
MHS has added Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Deb Colon to our staff to increase local access to mental health services. Deb provides services to patients right in the clinic. Patients are either referred by their primary care provider or can call the clinic for more information on setting up an appointment. Because 1 in 5 people will be affected by mental illness in their lifetime Madison Healthcare Services and our providers are stepping up our support of individuals with mental and behavioral health needs in our community. At MHS we believe that caring for your mental health is as important as taking care of your physical health because mental health impacts all areas of life.
